Saudi Arabia gave large donation to group connected to John McCain - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) Saudi Arabia gave $1 million to a nonprofit group that is connected to Sen. John McCain.

It happened in 2014, according to IRS documents.  The Institute for International Leadership, and its fundraising branch the McCain Institute Foundation received the funds.

Federal law prohibits foreign contributions to electoral campaigns, according to Bloomberg, but nonprofits are excluded.

Critics argue this arrangement helps foreign governments influence politicians, and get around the law.

“Funding the lawmakers’ nonprofit organizations is the next best thing,” said Craig Holman, the government affairs lobbyist for ethics watchdog Public Citizen to Bloomberg.

Similar donations were made to the Clinton Foundation from Australia, Norway, Sweden and Saudi Arabia. Holman believes the Clinton’s started the trend.

The McCain Institute for International Leadership has listed dozens of donors on his website including Chevron, Cisco, FedEx, and Walmart.

Originally the Saudi Arabian donation wasn’t listed on the website, but it was included after Bloomberg asked about it.

In the past year, Saudi Arabia has expressed concern over the Iran nuclear deal and a dwindling U.S. involvement in the Syrian war. John McCain criticized the Obama Administration over both issues.

Saudi Arabia remains a top U.S. ally despite massive human rights abuses and brutal executions.
