(TRUNEWS) The city of Houston is flooded after torrential rains fell over the weekend, covering highways and causing power outages.

At least five people are dead, mostly due to failure to driving in high waters or ignoring barricades.
Hundreds had to flee their homes. At least 1,000 houses are flooded in Harris County alone. Other evacuations are expected as local bayous are near flood stage. Harris County Judge Ed Emmett has declared the area a disaster, according to KTRK.
Gov. Greg Abbott extended the disaster declaration to nine counties in Texas.
More than 200 people had to be rescued near Cypress Creek when waters rose 5.5 feet above flood stage. Military boats and vehicles are assisting, as reported by KHOU. More rain is expected Tuesday.
In total, more than 1200 rescues were made in the area Monday.
“This is the most I have ever seen in the state of Texas,” Governor Greg Abbott said of the rescues at a news conference.
