(TRUNEWS) The governor of Utah claims pornography is causing a “public health crisis” and he plans to combat it with a resolution and a law.
Gov. Gary Herbert’s resolution formally declares the state recognizes a need for education and prevention against porn because it is “leading to a broad spectrum of individual and public health impacts and societal harms”, as reported by New York Daily News. It referenced how adult films causes biological addiction, changes in brain development, and emotional and relationship problems.
It passed in both houses of the legislature and was drafted by the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE).
“Utah is on the cutting edge of addressing the public health crisis of pornography,” said Dawn Hawkins, Executive Director of NCOSE in a press release.
Sen. Todd Weiler, who sponsored the resolution claims porn causes the hypersexualization of teens, low self-esteem, normalized violence toward women and increased demand for sex trafficking.
The bill that will accompany the law will require computer technicians to report any child pornography found during computer repairs.
A Harvard Business School professor found in a 2009 study that Utah was the number one buyer of adult films. Although the resolution takes a stand against pornography, it does not ban it.
