(TRUNEWS) The Tennessee General Assembly is considering a law to add new regulations for the handling of aborted babies.
The Fetal Remains Act passed by 79-9 in the House last week, after it got through the Senate with a 28-2 vote, according to LifeSite News. Now the Senate must approve the House amended version.
The legislation will clarify that reimbursement for the preparation , preservation, transfer, shipping or handling of an aborted baby or tissue would be a Class E felony. The sale of tissue is currently prohibited, but Rep. Matthew Hill (R-Jonesborough) said the measure is intended to show that lawmakers are taking a stand to show that Tennessee does “not allow the trafficking and sale for profit dead baby parts”.
Gov. Bill Haslam has indicated he will sign the bill, expressing disdain for the undercover Planned Parenthood videos released last year showing officials negotiating the sale of baby remains.
“As a result of deplorable practices being reported in other states related to the disposition of fetal remains, Governor Haslam has sought assurances that such illegal actions are not occurring in Tennessee,” said a statement on the governor’s website.
He has also instructed the Tennessee Department of Health to conduct a comprehensive review of abortion.
