(TRUNEWS) The European Union made a decision Monday to suspend the passport-free travel zone in Europe for two years, after EU interior ministers demanded the borders closed to stop the influx of migrants.
The travel zone, also known as the Schengen zone, was established as one of the unifying characteristics of the EU, and the ability for any of the participating 26 countries to travel between each other without a passport was lauded as the “union’s biggest ever achievement”.
At present the EU had already implemented six months worth of temporary checks on the borders between Germany and Austria; Denmark and Germany; Sweden and Denmark; Austria and Slovenia; Austria and Hungary; and Slovenia and Croatia, but the invoking of ‘article 26’ of the Schengen rules by Klaas Dijkhoff, the Dutch migration minister, means border controls can now be extended up for up to two years.
In addition to the border closing, Greece was handed a heavy handed proposal from Brussel’s leadership, as a form of punishment for not controlling their borders with Turkey. In the plan, the EU called for Greece to create detention camps with the ability to detain up to 300,000 asylum seekers on Greek territory for an indefinite amount of time, while also suspending Greece from the Schengen zone.
