(TRUNEWS) Sonic booms from fighter jets were mistaken for earthquakes throughout New Jersey, Thursday afternoon.
Originally local authorities were amiss to the origins of the blasts, which left people throughout the New Jersey area worried that an earthquake had hit the state.
The Drudge Report has now confirmed reports by the New York Post that the events were the result of U.S. fighter jets braking the speed of sound, creating the deafening booms that sounded like explosions and felt like a quake.
Confusion originated from an initial reports from an official for the Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst who told News12 that they did not hold exercises Thursday that would have caused a sonic boom.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that no seismic activity had occurred in the area, and noted that the sonic boom was felt 3km (2mi) NNE of Hammonton, 13km (8mi) SSE of Jackson, 17km (11mi) E of Williamstown, 21km (13mi) SE of Pine Hill, and 60km (37mi) S of Trenton in New Jersey.
