(TRUNEWS) Officials in the U.S., South Korea and Japan were on alert Thursday for a possible launch of a long-range ballistic missile from North Korea.
The last time they conducted such a test was in 2012. North Korean Central News alleged that the country is trying to develop a weather satellite.
Japan Times has reported a launch was imminent from North Korea’s Tonchang-ri site in the northwest part of the country, based on a study of satellite images from the area. South Korean officials claim there is increased activity there, and screens were set up to stop satellite surveillance.
On Jan 6. North Korea held a nuclear test to the ire of the United Nations Security Council, which may soon tighten sanctions in response to the incident.
North Korea claimed a hydrogen bomb was tested, but TRUNEWS reported it may have been a type of H-bomb.
Secretary of State John Kerry expressed concerns to China Wednesday, and urged them to persuade their trade partner to stop the tests. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing would tread lightly when making the request to North Korea.
The U.S. has six ballistic missile defense ship in Japan and two radars which can detect missile launches. U.S. Navy Admiral Harry Harris, the commander of the U.S. Pacific Command said he supports the idea of converting a U.S. Aegis missile test defense site in Hawaii to boost U.S. defenses.
U.S. and South Korean officials are also considering a mobile missile defense system in South Korea.
