China Warns U.S. To Stop “Provocations” - from TRUNEWS

China called on the United States to stop what the Chinese People’s Liberation Army commander calls its “provocations” in the South China Sea.

Commander Wu Shengli told U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Scott Swift during a meeting in Beijing that the Chinese Navy had exercised what it termed “maximum restraint” with regard to the U.S.

Shengli was speaking about recent U.S. maneuvers near Chinese islands and reef formations in the South China Sea, moves the U.S. made without permission of the Chinese government.

Wu said the Chinese Navy had given a number of warnings with regard to the maneuvers, calling them a “sheer provocation to China’s sovereign rights,” adding that they “pose grave threats to the security of islands and reefs in the South China Sea.”

Wu went on to say, “the U.S. conduct does not contribute to peace and stability in the South China Sea whatsoever.  The U.S. cannot impose its own claims on other nations. It cannot sabotage other nations’ sovereignty and security.”

Wu defended his country’s island building in the South China Sea as a ‘sensible, reasonable and legitimate’ operation.

Admiral Swift said the U.S. Navy does not want the South China Sea to become an issue that would lead to the disruption of ties between the two countries.  He said he hopes the two navies can maintain high-level exchanges and engage in more drills.  Swift also said that the two should improve the implementation of the Code for Unplanned Encounters at Sea, to prevent any future misunderstandings and misjudgment.
