(TRUNEWS) – Russian troops are engaged on the ground supporting Syrian forces battling rebels in the country, according to a report coming out of the Middle East. The report says that Russian forces have strategically positioned air forces and tanks in several locations in the country.
The Jerusalem Post says the Kuwaiti newspaper al-Rai’s report has not been verified, but did cite several unnamed U.S. sources from September, 2015, as verification that tanks and Russian assets had indeed been placed in key Syrian areas near rebel strong-holds.
Syria has been in a civil war for over four years. Bashar Assad’s forces have been engaged with rebels in various regions of the country, and have lost control of several key cities. It is those areas which the report says are recipients of the Russian presence.
In addition to the new troop movements, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkova reported to TASS that a major oil depot 15 kilometers southwest of the city of Raqqa, an oil refinery 50 kilometers south of Raqqa and an oil tank farm in the Al-Mahimira desert, 50 kilometers north of Deir ez-Zor have been destroyed by Russian Sukhoi Su-34 bombers over the weekend.
