(TRUNEWS) In what could very well be the beginning salvo of World War 3, a war plane has been reportedly shot down over Bayirbucak, in the mountainous area of the northern countryside of Latakia province in northern Syria, near the Turkish border.
Footage from Turkey’s Anadolu Agency showed two pilots parachuting out of the jet before it crashed. One of the pilots is reportedly in the hands of Turkmen forces in Syria who were searching for the other pilot, broadcaster CNN Turk reported, citing local sources.
The Russian Defense Ministry has confirmed in a press release that the plane was a Su-24 bomber, and has stated that during all of the planes flight time, “the aircraft was flying only within the borders of the Syrian territory.” A verifiable claim said officials, “that was registered by objective monitoring data.”
Turkish military officials have stated that the plane was shot down by two Turkish F-16s for violating their countries airspace, and have reported that the downed foreign jet was issued 10 warnings in five minutes. Russia authorities however are claiming the plane went down after coming under fire from the ground anti-aircraft artillery.
In a similar occurrence on October 3rd, a Russian fighter jet was forced to enter Turkish airspace while performing an evasive maneuver against a surface-to-air missile system, the commander of Russia’s Air Force said.
“Our fighter jet was on a combat mission in Northern Syria in very dense cloud conditions. When the aircraft was passing along the Turkish border, the onboard equipment set off an alarm indicating the plane was being targeted by some kind of air defense system,” Commander-in-Chief Viktor Bondarev told Komsomolskaya Pravda daily.
“The pilot had to take a split-second decision to perform an anti-missile maneuver. Well, [the plane] went a little bit into Turkish airspace. We acknowledged it frankly,” Bondarev added.
This recent escalation comes directly on the heels of Turkey’s call for a U.N. Security Council meeting to discuss attacks on Turkmens in neighboring Syria.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was visiting with Iran’s supreme leader to discuss how U.S. policies in the Middle East region were a threat to both countries at the time of the attack, and has yet to release an official statement on the matter.
