Report: Iranian Warplanes accompany Russian Bombers in Syria - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) – Fighter jets over Syria might not draw much attention, but the F-14 Tomcats recently making an appearance alongside Russian bombers should.  They are Iranian jets escorting Russian Tupolev TU-160’s while the heavy bombers have been pounding ISIS strongholds in Raqqa, Syria over the past few days.

And they are not only flying escort missions; they are flying very close to Israel.

According to a Debkafile report, ‘dozens of these upgraded warplanes, upgraded with intelligence-collection and tracking systems, have begun operating in Syrian air space near the Israeli border, under the pretense of escorting the Russian bombers. Iranian eyes in the sky are therefore studying the frontier area and gather valuable intelligence on Israel’s air defenses.’

The F-14’s are the very jets sold to the Shah by the U.S. before the revolution in 1979.  They have been updated repeatedly with state-of-the-art technology in spite of U.N. embargos which forbid it.  With their upgraded technology, DEBKAfile says, Iran has used their Russian counterparts as a cover to study Israeli air defenses knowing that under normal circumstances, Israeli Air Force jets would have attacked them by now.
