Military equipment is being taken away from law enforcement agencies around the country as part of an Executive Order issued by President Obama.
Congressman Mike Rogers (R-AL) sent a letter to the president after learning a Sheriff’s Department in his district will lose two armored vehicles. But, the recovery of equipment will go on nationwide.
In the letter, Rogers wrote, “Less than a week after the horrific attacks on civilians in Paris, it seems more urgent than ever to ensure our law enforcement have the best equipment we can provide to counter any attack”.
Obama issued Executive Order 13688 in January after the riots in Ferguson, Mo.
In 1997, the Department of Defense authorized the Pentagon to send excess equipment to local law enforcement free of charge. Now the feds want their equipment returned, and officials have until April 1, 2016 to do it.
