The teenager who was apprehended by school security over a homemade clock that resembled a bomb now wants $15 million in damages from the incident.
Lawyers for 14 year old Ahmed Mohamed are filing suit seeking a payday from several officials as a result of the student’s arrest in September, after a teacher reported what looked like a bomb to school security.
The incident prompted responses from those who thought Mohamed was profiled for being a Muslim, wrongfully arrested by police and suspended by the school. The media uproar that followed the incident led to Mohamed being invited to the White House by President Obama who complimented the teen’s clock design.
Some have said the clock was bought already assembled and that the entire episode was a carefully staged event.
Mohamed’s lawyers say that because of the incident, the teenager’s name and likeness will be “forever associated with arguably the most contentious and divisive socio-political issue of our time.”
One day after meeting the President, Mohamed’s family announced it was leaving the United States for Qatar.
Letters from the teen’s attorneys say his constitutional rights were violated and that Mohamed suffered ‘severe psychological trauma’ and that he was harassed by authorities. In all, demand letters from Mohamed’s lawyers are asking for 5 million from the Irving Independent School District and $10 million from the City of Irving, as well as written apologies from the school district and the city’s mayor and police chief.
