Located nearby, Lamar University posted posted a bulletin which read “in an abundance of caution due to activated flares at nearby chemical plants, Lamar University activities are suspended and the campus will be closed for the remainder of the day.”
Public and Government Affairs Manager Lee Dula has told the press The Examiner that “The ExxonMobil Beaumont Complex experienced a site-wide power outage,” and that the plant was using the flares as part of their power outage protocol. Dula also said that “there is no cause for alarm, and we will provide updates as they are available.”
Coincidentally, the price of crude made a steep rally today, going from the previous days trading price of $27 per barrel, to $30 at markets close.
The last major incident at the plant occurred on April 17th 2013, where a fire at the ExxonMobil refinery left 12 contract workers injured.
