President Obama will hold a meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch Monday to discuss executive orders he may take for more gun control.
He has indicated he wants to go around Congress because leaders in the House and Senate have indicated they are not interested in new laws. Republicans are calling the potential action as an overreach on his authority.
There are no specific plans yet, but some of the possibilities include requiring more gun sellers to become licensed dealers, who are required to do background checks. The action would eliminate so-called loopholes that allow buyers to obtain weapons at gun shows.
Some experts say it will but a burden on small businesses. The National Rifle Association has also opposed the new plan.
During his weekly radio address last week, Obama talked about recent violence.
He said, “We know that we can’t stop every act of violence. But what if we tried to stop even one?”
On Thursday, President Obama will discuss the issue on a town hall meeting on CNN. He will also make a push during his State of the Union address on Jan. 12.
