Sunni allies of Saudi Arabia, including Sudan and Bahrain have cut ties with Iran. The UAE has downgraded its relationship with Tehran.
The move occurred after a series of events which began when Saudi Arabia beheaded Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr, over the weekend, who was executed with 47 others for “terrorism”. In protest, Saudi Arabia’s embassy was attacked in Tehran.
Most of the people executed were convicted as al-Qaeda members, whom Saudi Arabia accuses Iran of supporting. Nimr and three other Shi’ites were accused by Riyadh of starting riots in between 2010 and 2012.
Nimr’s nephew, Ali Mohammed Baqir al-Nimr is currently on death row in Saudi Arabia for participating in the 2012 protests using his cell phone. He was a juvenile at the time, and is set for execution by crucifixion and beheading at any time.
The U.S. and Germany have called on Saudi Arabia to use restraint. Reuters has reported Saudi Arabian officials “don’t care” what Washington thinks.
Meanwhile, the violence has spread to Iraq. Two Sunni mosques in the Shi’ite majority Hilla province have been bombed.
The tensions have caused stock markets in the Middle East to drop sharply, despite stronger oil. The market in Qatar fell 2.5 percent Monday.
