(TRUNEWS) Tensions in the South China Sea continue to escalate, now that China has deployed fighter jets to a contested island.
Fox News has reported Chinese Senyang J-11s and Xian JH-7’s being deployed to Woody Island, where surface-to-air missiles were sent last week.
On Tuesday, Secretary of State hosted Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Washington, where he said he hoped military flights and patrols by U.S. Navy ships near the islands would end.
Kerry asked that China end its militarization of the South China Sea.
He also warned other countries who claim parts of the waters to refrain from posturing in the area, including the Philippines and Vietnam.
“There have been steps by China, by Vietnam, by others that have unfortunately created an escalatory cycle,” Kerry said.
After Woody Island, which is part of the Paracel Island chain, the Chinese could also put fighter jets on other islands in the Spratly chain.
In the past few years, China has erected artificial islands in the South China Sea, which is a major hub for the transport of oil and other natural resources. More than $5 trillion moves through the area every year.
Also, Tuesday, the head of the U.S. Pacific Command testified before Congress where he testified of growing Chinese militarization, claiming China is “changing the operational landscape”.
Adm. Harry Harris believes China wants hegemony in East Asia.
