Kerry pressures Congress not to renew Iran Sanctions Act - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) Secretary of State John Kerry is pressuring members of Congress not to renew the Iran Sanctions Act.

The law, enacted in 2006 imposed sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program. It expires at the end of the year, but all Republicans want to send a message by keeping it in force, according to The Jerusalem Post.

Last July Iran and six world powers, including the U.S., agreed to a deal to lift sanctions in exchange for a promise by Tehran to curb its nuclear ambitions.   Many legislators, including some Democrats, adamantly opposed the agreement.

Kerry, who testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee claimed members should allow more time to see how Iran responds.

But Iran has already stirred the pot. In October, they violated U.N. rules by testing precision-guided ballistic missiles, as reported by TRUNEWS.

Tehran was defiant, claiming they do not pay attention to resolutions against Iran.

“Our missile program is not a threat against our friends but it is a threat against our enemies. Israel should understand what it means.”

Israel had expressed objections to the deal many times, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed a joint session of Congress last year to explain why Israel is concerned Iran will strike them.

President Obama did not attend that speech.

Part of the deal also includes Iran receiving $150 billion.  Kerry said they probably would only see a third of it.

“Our estimates are it’s somewhere in the vicinity of $50 to $55 billion at some point in time but it’s way below that right now.” Kerry said. “And in fact, they are complaining about the slowness with which there has been a process of repatriation.”
