Secretary of State John Kerry is expressing doubt about the “cessation of hostilities” agreement made between the U.S. and Russia regarding the war in Syria.
He said things “can get a lot uglier”, according to The Cable.
The remarks were made to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Kerry explained the plans, which include ditching the previous ceasefire set to begin last week. The new agreement is supposed to start Saturday.
Kerry didn’t appear optimistic, but instead explained the idea as the best option among worse options.
The deal does not involve ISIS and al-Nusra. The U.S. and Russian warplanes have both targeted these groups. Russia has also focused on groups opposed to the Syrian government.
Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) seemed skeptical about the agreement and whether it would reduce Russian airstrikes against anti-government rebels.
The U.S. wants Syrian President Bashar al-Assad removed from power. Moscow wants him to stay.
There is also a “Plan B”, according to Kerry, but he didn’t provide details. The Wall Street Journal recently reported Defense Department officials may increase support for the Syrian rebels, which could cause the war to drag out.
Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) doesn’t believe there is an alternate plan, as reported by Voice of America, and therefore, Russia will remain undeterred.
“I think the secretary is negotiating a situation where there is no Plan B. Russia knows there will be no plan B”.
The Syrian government has expressed support for the agreement. Assad has set a date of April 13 for parliamentary elections to be held.
