The Muslim Brotherhood is expressing anger and condemnation at presidential candidate and Senator Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) and Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) for a bill they introduced to Congress.
The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday cleared the Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Act, as reported by Breitbart.
“The Muslim Brotherhood’s embrace of terrorism and the very real threat it poses to American lives and the national security of the United States make it long overdue for designation,” House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) said in a statement.
The bill would defund groups in the U.S. that are linked to the group and will target “secret Palestine Committees”. It will also prevent foreigners with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood from coming to the U.S. The group could be prosecuted and have their assets frozen.
Officials from The Muslim Brotherhood on their website accused Cruz and Diaz-Balart of being manipulated by the “pro-Israel Zionist lobby”.
The group is banned in several countries including Russia, Syria and Egypt.
Some Democrats, including John Conyers (D-Mich.), are opposed to the measure.
“Since swearing off violence in the 1950s, the Brotherhood has become a predominantly non-violent religious, political, and social service organization.”
The movement was founded in 1928 by Islamic cleric Hassan al-Banna, who wanted to establish a world caliphate. Its stated goals are for “Islam to dominate, not be dominated, to impose its law on all nations and extend its power to the entire planet”.
The group is aligned with Hamas and the Sinai Province branch of the Islamic State, although their website claims they are a “peaceful organization”.
