(TRUNEWS) The European Union is warning about a possible “hot war” between Turkey and Russia over Syria.
Tensions have escalated recently with the Turkish bombings of the Syrian Kurds.
The caution was given by the EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini who spoke before the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee in Brussels on Tuesday.
Russia started their airstrike campaign in September, striking ISIS and defending the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. A few weeks later, Turkey, who wants Assad removed, shot down a Russian warplane on the Syrian-Turkish border.
TRUNEWS has reported previously Turkey has purchased oil from ISIS in Syria. The Turks are also nervous about the Kurds.
The stakes are too high for the sides to just stop fighting, according to Zero Hedge.
The U.S., Turkey and NATO countries do not want Assad in power and are not likely to allow his government to stay in control of Aleppo. Recently, Assad’s forces, along with the Russians and Iranian-backed Hezbollah regained control of the city.
Iran is unlikely to send Hezbollah back to Lebanon, as they are looking to secure themselves in the region.
Russians have an air and naval base in Syria, and will want to protect their investment.
Then there is Saudi Arabia, who hates Iran and Assad. They have recently put together a 20 nation, 350,000 troop Arab military coalition to train in the northern part of their country. It is called operation “Northern Thunder”.
The Saudis have said they will send troops into Syria.
