(TRUNEWS) Italian officials have expressed concerns about U.S. surveillance.
According to Times of Israel, former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was being monitored, and officials want the U.S. Ambassador to Rome to explain.
John Phillips was called to answer questions on why the media was reporting that Berlusconi and his associates were wiretapped in 2011.
La Repubblica and Germanys Suddutsche Zeitung claimed classified documents released by WikiLeaks show the NSA spied on others too, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
The National Security Agency had listened to talks between Berlusconi and Netanyahu, which included a request by the Israeli leader for help in dealing with Washington, after relations were strained.
Apparently Netanyahu sought many times for help in dealing with the U.S. Relations were tense because the Obama Administration objected to the building of Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem.
Other alleged eavesdropping included listening in on Berlusconi and former French president Nicolas Sarkozy talk about the banking sector and public debt.
The U.S. was also concerned about Italy’s relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to The Guardian.
Last year relations between the U.S. and German were strained after it was revealed the NSA for years tapped the phone calls of German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
