(TRUNEWS) A man arrested Thursday in connection the Brussels terror attack has been released.
Faycal Cheffou was let go due to a lack of evidence Monday, according to the federal prosecutor in Belgium, as reported by NBC.
The man was released on the same day officials upped the death toll to 35 in last week’s massacre. There are several suspects in custody in Italy and the Netherlands, but it is not clear if they were involved in the Brussels attack specifically or just rounded up in a string of raids on terror in general.
“The international coordination is very intense,” Belgium’s Foreign Office spokesman Didier Van Der Haefelt told NBC News.
On Monday, Brussels police arrested three people but did not indicate if they were tied to last week’s plot. Two other potential suspects were picked up by law enforcement over the weekend.
At first, it was believed Cheffou was the “man in white” seen in the video footage of the suspects. Now police have reiterated their call on the public to help identify the man.
Breitbart has reported that Brussels Mayor Yves Mayeur accused Cheffou last year of trying to recruit refugees who lived at an asylum center. Cheffou lived close the European Union headquarters.
Theo Francken, Belgium’s Secretary of State for Asylum and Migration referred to Cheffou as a “jihadist creep”. Cheffeu claims he is a freelance journalist.
In 2002, Cheffou’s brother was killed during a police raid on his home where grenades were reportedly found.
Officials say 96 people are still hospitalized for injuries sustained in the blast. Four Americans were among the 35 that were killed.
