West criticized for lack of response to ISIS removal from Palmyra - from TRUNEWS

The West is being criticized by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad after Russian and Syrian forces helped remove ISIS from Palmyra.

Assad told Sputnik the recent victory was one of the biggest since the war began, but that Russia’s help was the main contributor to ISIS being pushed back.  He blamed the U.S.-led coalition for a “lack of seriousness”.

The U.S. and its allies want Assad removed from power while claiming the goal in Syria is to remove ISIS. President Obama promised the coalition would “degrade and destroy” the group, as reported by RT.  British Prime Minister David Cameron echoed the same sentiments.  Neither has spoken out about the importance of Palmyra.

“We are not so much surprised and disappointed by the position of Western colleagues as puzzled by their true intentions in regard to peaceful settlement in Syria,” said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, according to Russia Beyond the Headlines.

The Syrian president believes fighting terrorism is the key to ending the country’s crisis.

“There are no other ways to protect Syria than by fighting terrorism. Of course, there’s a political process too, but the fight against terrorism is key,” he told Sputnik.

Palmyra was seized by ISIS last year. It is an important cultural area, but many of the ruins were destroyed. It is a border city between Syria and Iraq.
