(TRUNEWS) The European Parliament is set to vote Thursday on a resolution to help Christians in Iraq and Syria.
During a recent debate in France, members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe recognized the atrocities officially as “genocide”, a legal definition designated by the United Nations.
PACE is a human rights group and partner with the European Union.
“What we witness in the Middle East is clearly genocide aimed at the destruction of Christians and other religious minorities. This vote gives the European Parliament the opportunity either to respond appropriately to these systematic attacks or to stand idly by,” said Sophia Kuby, director of EU advocacy for Alliance Defending Freedom International.
A resolution on genocide would be an important step in pressuring the UN to also issue a resolution. It could also spark action by the International Criminal Court.
The U.S. has not declared the persecution as genocide, despite requests from the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom. But, resolutions have been introduced in Congress, according to EWTN News.
In September, Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) introduced a bill urging Congress to declare people who carry out crimes against Christians and other ethnic groups to be declared war criminals.
On Tuesday, Congressman Frank Wolf announced the creation of the Wilberforce Initiative’s international religious-freedom scorecard, according to National Catholic Register, which will grade members of Congress on their track record in defending religious freedom internationally.
