Jordanian King: influx of refugees has brought his country to a “boiling point” - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) King Abdullah of Jordan says the influx of hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees has brought his country to a “boiling point.”

His comments were made during an interview with the BBC, who he also told “sooner of later, I think, the dam is going to burst.”

Jordan, who shares their northern border with Syria, is currently hosting 635,000 of the 4.6 million Syrians registered as refugees with the UN, a burden which the King Abdullah says has placed enormous pressure on Jordan’s social services, infrastructure and economy.

The UN is seeking $7.7 billion to fund the relief operations for 22.5 million people in Syria and neighboring countries like Jordan for the next year. However, even in 2015 raising capital from the international community fell well short of announced goals, as only 43% of the $2.9 billion was funded.

King Abdullah told the BBC that 25% of their state budget is already being spent on helping refugees, and stated that “this week is going to be very important for Jordanians to see if there is going to be help not only for Syrian refugees but for their own future as well.”

The Jordanian king also addressed criticism from the international community over his countries reluctance to admit an estimated 16,000 refugees stranded in a remote desert region along their northern border with Syria. King Abdullah said that there were “elements” of the ISIS among the refugees, many of whom have fled areas controlled by the jihadist group, and that the 50 to 100 admitted each day were “going through a strong vetting system.”

“If you want to take the moral high ground on this issue, we’ll get them all to an airbase and we’re more than happy to relocate them to your country, if what you’re saying is there’s only 16,000,” King Abdullah added.

The recent update from Jordan came on the heels of the eery prediction by Klaus Schwab, the executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, who predicted during the Davos summit that a mass migration of 1 billion refugees could move north into Europe if the crises in the Middle East persist.
