Just hours from Iowa caucuses, candidates continue campaigning - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) The presidential candidates, both Democratic and Republican are campaigning today in Iowa, in the final hours before the Iowa caucus.

There is a tight race on both sides. Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas are the top two candidates on the GOP side in the latest Quinnipiac University Poll. Trump has 40 percent among first time caucus participants, compared to 22 percent for Cruz.  Florida Senator Marco Rubio was in third.

The Republican candidates have been courting evangelicals and conservatives, which typically turn out during the Iowa caucuses, according to Fox News. The New Hampshire Primary, which will be held Feb. 9, tends to favor politically moderate candidates.

On the Democratic side, the poll also shows Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont at 62 percent, ahead of Hillary Clinton with 41 percent, among first time participants.

Those who have attended other caucuses have said they will vote for Cruz and Clinton, according to the poll.

The event will begin at 8 p.m. ET and the results should be known within a few hours.

Iowa is different from New Hampshire, where people get to vote throughout the day.  Democrats in Iowa gather in groups to publically show their pick for a candidate.  Republicans vote on a sheet of paper.

The early primaries serve as filters to show which candidates are doing well. Contenders who make a poor showing tend to lose donor backing and usually drop out of the race.
