(TRUNEWS) The United Nations is set to announce a date for new peace talks in Syria.
“There is a sense of urgency in having the talks resume, because we need to keep the momentum,” U.N. Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura said.
He said hostilities needed to die down and the humanitarian crisis should be improved for the discussions to produce fruit.
Recently, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry held talks about the Syrian situation with Saudi Arabia, as reported by TRUNEWS.
The U.N. had hoped to help 1 million people with food in rural areas, but supplies were lower than anticipated.
“Even in areas where we had full approval from the government, there have been infinite problems in actually reaching the places, and in others where we had conditional approvals, like Daraya, we haven’t been able to reach the people at all,” as reported by Reuters.
Children are in danger of dying from malnutrition.
There could be some problems with the scheduling of peace talks as Ramadan is in June. The deadline for discussions is August.
Meanwhile, Arab Gulf leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council have held meetings with Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov, according to Al Jazeera.
The two sides have major disagreements on what should happen to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Another involves all the opposition groups that are fighting.
Fighting has not stopped. A Kurdish-led coalition of armed groups made advances against ISIS. Syrian Democratic Forces, backed by a U.S. coalition and headed by the Kurdish People’s Protection Unit (YPG) have taken control of four villages near Raqqa.
