(TRUNEWS) Rodrigo Duterte, the newly elected president of the Philippines is posturing against the Catholic Church again by promising to enact a three-child policy in the country.
The affirmation came just days after the leader referred to the church as “sons of whores”, as reported by Reuters.
“The most hypocritical institution is the Catholic Church,” he told reporters.
He also criticized the church in the past when Pope Francis visited Manila and held up traffic.
The 71-year-old is due to take office on June 30. His no-nonsense style helped him win the May 9 election, according to reported TRUNEWS, despite the fact that there is a large Catholic population in the Philippines, about 80 million.

The spokesman for the Archdiocese of Lingayen, Monsignor Oliver Mendoza said the church respected Duterte’s opinion, but that they needed to speak up about policies that are contrary to Catholic teaching. Besides a limit on children, Catholics are opposed to the death penalty, which Duterte wants to bring back. It was repealed in 2006.
Bishop Joselito Zulueta from the University of Santo Tomas blasted Duterte.
“Like most liberal, secular politicians, Duterte is a deist,” said Joselito Zulueta of the University of Santo Tomas. “This in itself is a self-serving position conceived out of human conceit. He will do as he pleases except when he’s stopped by public criticism.”
He said there will also be disagreements over the legalization of divorce and the distribution of contraceptives.
