Bats wreak havoc in Australia forcing people to stay inside - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) The resort town of New South Wales, Australia has been bombarded with thousands of bats, trapping residents. But the government has been slow to respond.

Swarms of them set up shop a few years ago, but the population has now tripled in the past few years. Since the Australian native bat is a protected species, they cannot be extracted.

“Every morning, without fail, I have to wash the deck, wash the car,” said local resident, Kent Lewis, in a Reuters interview.

The animals have caused power outages. Tourists are now vacationing somewhere else and property values are on the decline.

The local government recently a state of emergency and has forked over $1.8 million to help officials disperse the bats, according to Global News. Animal rights activists claim smoking out the bats, clearing vegetation or drumming up noise will not motivate the bats to leave and that people should just wait it out. They don’t seem concerned about the problem it is causing for residents, especially in Batemans Bay.

“We’ve had many residents complain, they feel they’re prisoners in their own homes, they can’t go out, they have to have air conditioning on the whole time, windows closed,” New South Wales Environment Minister Mark Speakman said.

Residents in China are also feeling trapped, as sandstorms have wreaked havoc in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.

The most recent event was about 328 feet high and lasted more than 40 minutes.  Visibility was at about 32 feet.

People were forced to close windows and doors and advised to stay inside. Sandstorms can cause an enormous amount to damage to property and animals.
