EU and West worried about possible presidential system in Turkey - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) A full presidential system is on the horizon in Turkey.

Tayyip Erdogan, who many accuse of trying to grab more power, confirmed Binali Yildirim as the new prime minister. He will replace Ahmet Davataglou, who announced his resignation a few weeks ago over skirmishes with Erdogan.

Yirdirim will help eliminate any resistance among the ruling AKP party member to the Erdogan agenda.  A new cabinet is expected to be named Tuesday, and will consist only of loyalists, according to Reuters.

“We have entered a period of a ‘de facto’ presidential system, where Erdogan’s policies will be implemented very clearly,” one of the officials said.

The EU and other Western nations are concerned about the authoritarianism being exercised by Erdogan. In the past few months, there has been an increasing number of arrests of journalists and political dissidents.

Erdogan has also made demands to the European Union. He wants visa-free travel for Turkish citizens and has threatened to unleash thousands of refugees on Europe if his requests aren’t met, as reported by TRUNEWS.

European Parliament President Martin Schulz criticized Erdogan.

“We see Turkey under Erdogan on its way to being a one-man-state,” he told German newspaper Koelner Stadtanzeiger.

In order to transfer to a presidential system, the constitution will need to be changed. At least 330 members of parliament will need to support the move. The new prime minister should help Erdogan’s party to gel.
