(TRUNEWS) Members of the EU have begun arriving in Japan for the G7 summit.
Commission President Jean-Claude Junker will join the Group of Seven leaders from the U.S., U.K. Canada, Germany, Japan, Italy and France to discuss the global economy. They are expected to try and come up with a plan to spur growth.
Other issues they will touch upon include terrorism, cyber security, refugees, trade and maritime security, including the growing tensions in the South China Sea as reported by TRUNEWS.
Global health initiatives are a top agenda item, as reported by The Diplomat, as the leaders want a stronger response to public health crises, such as Zika viruses – and universal health coverage.
President Obama is there to talk with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ahead of the event to discuss crime on U.S. military bases, according to Reuters. Recently a civilian worker working on the base in Okinawa was arrested in connection with the murder of a Japanese woman.
“The government is fully aware of the seriousness and graveness of the recent incident in Okinawa, and considering the feelings of the people, Prime Minister Abe will seek strict measures from President Obama,” said Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.
They will also talk about the global economy, regional issues and pay tribute to the victims of Hiroshima, which is scheduled for Friday. Obama will be the first sitting president to visit. Some Japanese people have called for Obama to apologize, as reported by Stars and Stripes.
The president insists he will not say sorry for the 1945 bombings.
