(TRUNEWS) Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin has vetoed the bill that would make it a felony for a doctor to perform an abortion.
Last Thursday, the Oklahoma legislature passed the bill, which would have prevented an abortion physician from obtaining a license in the state and would have made the performing the procedure punishable by up to three years in prison, as reported by TRUNEWS.
Fallin issued the veto, claiming the bill was too “vague” and would have been challenged constitutionally, according to KFOR. There was a “life of the mother” exception.
The bill is so ambiguous and so vague that doctors cannot be certain what medical circumstances would be considered ‘necessary to preserve the life of the mother,” Fallin said. “The absence of any definition, analysis or medical standard renders this exception vague, indefinite and vulnerable to subjective interpretation and application.”
But she said she believed the U.S. Supreme Court should take another look at Roe v. Wade.
“The most direct path to a re-examination of the United States Supreme Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade is the appointment of a conservative, pro-life justice to the United States Supreme Court,” she said.
That is what the bill’s author, Sen. Nathan Dahm (R-Broken Arrow) was hoping for.
The bill passed by a wide margin, but there is no word yet on whether the legislators will try to override it.
