(TRUNEWS) The state of Texas has filed a lawsuit to stop the Obama administration’s transgender bathroom directive. Gov. Greg Abbott made the filing public in a Twitter message Wednesday.
Nine other states have joined the suit, including Alabama, Louisiana, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Utah, Georgia, the Arizona Department of Education and Maine’s Governor, Paul LePage.
On May 13, Obama sent a letter to every school district in the country mandating that they allow transsexuals to use the restrooms of their choice, as reported by TRUNEWS. It was suggested that schools failing to comply could lose federal aid.
Before the Obama directive, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick blasted the superintendent of the Fort Worth Independent School District for requiring schools to allow transgender students to choose the bathroom matching their “gender identity”.
North Carolina is also battling Obama’s Justice Department after it passed a law requiring transgenders to use the restrooms corresponding to their sex at birth. It applies to schools and public places, as reported by Reuters.
The federal government claims North Carolina is violating the Civil Rights Act.
Abbott, who was the former Texas Attorney General said the Obama is acting outside of the Constitution.
“The president has no authority to enact laws whatsoever. Several times Congress has taken up the issue of whether to expand the Civil Rights Act and Title IX and whether or not to include transgender. Both times or multiple times, Congress has decided against that,” Abbott said.
Ever since the North Carolina law was passed, the issue has caused a heated debate. Mississippi approved a similar law.
