(TRUNEWS) Texas Senator Ted Cruz has won the Iowa Caucus, with 28 percent of the vote, Donald Trump came in second with 24 percent, and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida took third with 23 percent.
The other GOP hopefuls fell way behind, including Dr. Ben Carson with 9 percent, Rand Paul at 5 percent and Jeb Bush had 3 percent. Ohio Gov. John Kasich, former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee each received less than 2 percent of the vote.
Rubio celebrated his third place victory by giving a speech.
“When I am the nominee, we are going to unify the conservative movement,” he said. “I want to thank our powerful and might God.”
Huckabee has already tweeted that he is dropping out of the race, according to Fox News.
On the Democratic side, the race is ongoing. With 88 percent of precincts reporting, Hillary Clinton is at 50 percent, and Sen. Bernie Sanders has 49 percent. Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley dropped out of the race.
The early primaries and caucuses serve as filters to show which candidates are doing well, as reported earlier by TRUNEWS Contenders who make a poor showing tend to lose donor backing and usually drop out of the race.
