Texas Court rules in favor of Bible verses for cheerleaders - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) The Texas Supreme Court has decided a case involving cheerleaders from Kountze, Texas who came under fire for writing Bible verses on run-through banners at school games.

The 8-0 decision was issued, overturning a previous court of appeals decision that denied the free speech of the students, according to Liberty Institute, the group that represents the cheerleaders.

The initial case was won by the cheerleaders, but was later overturned.

Texas Senator and GOP Presidential candidate Ted Cruz filed an amicus brief in support of the cheerleaders last year, as reported by TRUNEWS

It began in 2012, when the Freedom from Religion Foundation, based in Wisconsin, decided to pressure the school superintendent. The cheerleaders had painted inspirational Bible quotes on banners at football games. They had paid for all the materials themselves.

With support from the community and parents, the cheerleaders decided to seek a temporary restraining order to stop the school from prohibiting their free speech.

District Court Judge Steven Thomas ruled the banners as being constitutional in 2013, but an appeal by Kountze Independent School District to the Beaumont Court of Appeals left some issues unresolved, and paved the way for a ban. Now the Texas Supreme Court decision will force the Court of Appeals to reconsider the case.

This incident highlights an ongoing struggle with freedom of speech and freedom of religion in schools.  Recently a high school coach in Bremerton, Washington was fired for praying on the field after games, as TRUNEWS reported.
