Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan had apparently warned Belgium about one of the men involved in Tuesday’s terror attack – and predicted the massacre.
Last June, Turkey captured one of the terrorists at Turkey’s border with Syria. He was released to Belgium with a warning that he was a “foreign fighter”, according to The Independent.
Erdogan did not name the man publically. Belgium officials claimed they could not establish any links between the attacker and terrorism.
More than 50 people were killed Tuesday when a bombs went off at the Brussels Airport and Molenbeek Metro station. More than 200 were injured.
One of the attackers is still on the run.
Last week, Erdogan predicted the explosions while giving a speech at the UN.
“There is no reason why the bomb that exploded in Ankara cannot explode in Brussels, where an opportunity to show off in the heart of the city to supporters of the terror organization is presented, or in any city in Europe. Despite this clear reality, European countries are paying no attention,” he said, as reported by RT.
He blamed the rise in terror on countries and organizations that support it, including the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
He also criticized the EU, and claimed countries need to work together to eliminate terror. Erdogan pledged support to Brussels.
“I would like to underscore that we are ready to offer all kinds of support to our ally Belgium,” he said.
Turkey is also ready to work with Israel to combat terror. Erdogan talked about it with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin by phone Wednesday, according to The Jerusalem Post.
There have been some disagreements between the two countries in recent years as Turkey supports Hamas.
