(TRUNEWS) The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) invited Donald Trump and other presidential candidates to speak at their annual forum in Washington but then chided their delegates for cheering for him.
About 18,000 people attended Trump’s speech Monday and most cheered when he promised the U.S. would support Israel, and criticized President Obama, according to the Times of Israel.
“He may be the worst thing that ever happened to Israel,” he said.
Trump also promised to dump the Iran nuclear deal.
“The problem here is fundamental. We’ve rewarded the world’s leading state sponsor of terror with 150 billion dollars and we’ve received nothing in return.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly criticized the agreement, claiming it would cause Iran to be more aggressive toward Israel.
In December, Trump was booed during the Republican Jewish Coalition’s candidate’s Forum for refusing to say he would move the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem. At the AIPAC, he hinted that he changed his mind.
“We will move the American embassy to the eternal capital of the Jewish people,” he declared to applause. “We will send a clear signal that there is no daylight between America and our most reliable ally the state of Israel.”
While AIPAC’s website claims the group’s mission is to “strengthen, protect and promote the U.S.-Israel relationship”, the leaders scolded their delegates for cheering during Trump’s comments.
AIPAC’s leaders stood on stage Tuesday morning behind their president Lillian Pinkus, who delivered prepared statements.
“We say unequivocally that we do not countenance ad hominem attacks and we take great offense at those that are levied against the president of the United States of America from our stage,” she said. “There are people in our AIPAC family who were deeply hurt last night,”
The audience cheered Pinkus’ remarks.
