(TRUNEWS) It sounded more like a rally or a cheer at a football game than official business conducted on Capitol Hill.
Chants of “shame, shame, shame” by Democrats broke out in the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday when pro-LGBT legislation was struck down. GOP lawmakers defeated the measure, by a small margin, which would have nullified a provision in the defense authorization passed in the House Wednesday. It stated religious organizations that receive federal contracts can’t be discriminated against.
Gay rights supporters believed it could cause unfairness toward the LGBT community. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-NY), who is openly gay, authored an amendment to restrict funds from companies that don’t comply with President Obama’s executive order prohibiting federal contractors from discriminating against LGBT worker.
It was believed that the amendment would pass, but the GOP leadership was accused of holding the vote open, and votes were switched.
All 183 Democrats and 29 Republicans backed the amendment. Eight members did not vote, including five Democrats.
New York Republican Rep. Peter King told The Daily Caller, “The Democrats felt the vote was changed and they protested it. It was all legitimate on all sides. My objection is to the executive order. We shouldn’t be doing this type of thing by executive order.” He added, “If there is discrimination, we have legislation on the books to address it and if not we need more legislation not to do it by executive order.”
House speaker Paul Ryan claimed it was a state issue and defended the bill, according to Zero Hedge.
“This is federalism; the states should do this. The federal government shouldn’t stick its nose in its business,” he said.
The Obama Administration has stepped up its pro-LGBT posturing recently in light of the transgender laws in North Carolina, as reported by TRUNEWS.
