(TRUNEWS) The FBI is investigating a case of deliberate food contamination at several grocery stores in Michigan.
An unidentified man was apprehended after a Whole Foods worker reported seeing him spraying fresh produce. A phone tip led authorities to the perpetrator.
“The suspect has admitted to using hazardous materials to contaminate food in several Ann Arbor-area grocery stores,” said an FBI special agent to Detroit News.
He apparently sprayed a liquid concoction of hand sanitizer, water, and mice poison on the food.
Dozens of other stores may have also been hit and thousands of people could be affected, although there are no reports of illness linked to the incident. Officials have advised people to throw out fresh produce or items purchased from salad bars between mid-March and the end of April.
CBS Detroit claims the man may have also compromised food at Walmart, Target, and Meijer stores.
Terrorism through food has been a concern of federal officials for years. After 9-11, the U.S. government spent billions of dollars trying to thwart potential attacks and assessing possible breaches in food safety, according to NPR.
The FDA is concerned about bulk storage facilities, and companies that don’t have adequate security. Also of concern, food businesses that hire transient workers without performing background checks.
In 1984, there was a bioterror attack at a Taco Time salsa bar in The Dalles, Oregon, where a woman sprayed salmonella into the food at a salad bar. Over 700 people were sickened.
