Russia gives away free land, may be trying to keep out Chinese - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) Russia is giving away free land in its Far East region to all citizens willing to put it to use.  The area stretches from the Arctic near Alaska to the islands off Japan’s coast.

A family of five may be able to get up to 12 acres tax and payment free, under a law signed by President Vladimir Putin.

The climate is cold and harsh, but there is an abundance of natural resources in the region.  Russia seeks to maintain its position as the world’s top wheat exporter at 25 million tons.  They also want to sell meat to China and soy to Japan, according to Sputnik.

“We have actually become the leaders by passing both Canada and America. Of course, we plan to hold the first place [in the new agricultural year] with almost 25 million tons of wheat exports. Markets, both new and old, are opening for us. Of course, this is traditionally the Chinese market and we’re currently working on that,” said Agriculture Minister Alexander Tkachev.

The other reason for giving free land to Russian families may be to keep out the Chinese. Last year a Russian official claimed 1.5 million Chinese people had crossed the border into Russia’s Far East, according to ABC.  Intermarriage could become a problem.

Chinese people living just south of the border outnumber Russians by 10:1, as reported in The New York Times.  There are concerns by Moscow that China could encroach on the region and overtake Siberia.

China has also expressed an interest in building factories in Russia, and then moving in their people to work, making up for the population shortage in that part of Russia.
