(TRUNEWS) Russia wants a U.S.-led coalition to initiate joint airstrikes in Syria, starting next week. It may be a sign Moscow is trying to build better relations with the West.
But, it may also cause problems with the partnership between Russia and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, according to The Washington Post. The Syrian government has benefitted since Russia intervened in the conflict last year. The U.S. and its allies want Assad removed from power. Just recently, though, the Russians said they would consider supporting his removal, as reported by TRUNEWS.
The U.S., along with NATO has ceased military operations with Russia since the annexation of Crimea in 2014.
They want to specifically target al-Nusra Front for not adhering to the ceasefire, as well as other groups and terror organizations like al-Qaeda. Moscow has also expressed an interest in striking convoys carrying weapons and ammunition crossing into Syria from Turkey.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu also warned that his country will act unilaterally if necessary.
“We propose . . . a joint action between the Russian Air Force and the U.S.-led coalition to plan and conduct strikes against the al-Nusra Front, which does not support the cease-fire, as well as against convoys of arms and fighters crossing the Syrian-Turkish border,” Shoigu said.
He believes it will help start up the peace process.
U.S. defense officials responded by saying there is not plan to expand its military interactions with Russia.
