Turkey wants EU envoy answer for comments, Erdogan making demands - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) The authoritarian leadership of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan seems to be growing.

Turkey has demanded the EU envoy answer for critical comments made last week about the migrant deal.

“We have conveyed the anger felt over the ambassador’s comments to him, and that we condemn the expressions he used,” said a source in a Reuters report, who cited Turkish Foreign Ministry sources.

Hanjoerg Haber, the head of the EU delegation to Turkey was summoned by officials in Ankara to provide an explanation as to why he referred to the EU-Turkey visa deal as “starting like a Turk, ending like a German”.

According to the Daily Sabah that saying insinuates that Turkey lacks the discipline to keep their commitments under the deal.

“No diplomat, and especially no ambassador, can address the president of a country where he is posted for his job like this,” said Turkish EU Minister Volkan Bozkir.

The deal for Turkey to block the passage of refugees into Europe and to take in more has been on shaky ground this week, as reported by TRUNEWS.  Since Prime Minister Ahmet Davataglou has stepped down, Erdogan has become more demanding.

Journalists and political dissidents have been arrested. Recently reporter Arzu Yildiz was sentenced to 20 months and lost the rights to her children after exposing a video about weapons smuggling, which was denied by the Turkish government.  According to RT, her lawyer called it an “act of revenge”.

In 2014,  trucks belonging to Turkey’s national security agency were allegedly smuggling weapons for rebels across the border into Syria. Erdogan claimed humanitarian aid was being transported. He accused prosecutors of “treason and espionage”.

Other journalists were also jailed over their reporting in the case.
