(TRUNEWS) The Turkish Prime Minister is calling it quits after a rift with Tayyip Erdogan.
Ahmet Davutoglu has pledged his support to Turkey’s president, claiming he bears no anger. But, it is believed he fell from grace, as reported by BBC, after disagreeing with Erdogan’s plans to shift the country toward a presidential system, which would boost his power.
Last week Davutoglu had some of his authority taken away by Erdogan.
The congress will meet later this month, where a successor will be chosen. Earlier this week the members of parliament broke out into a fistfight over the news.
As reported by TRUNEWS, the ruling AK Party has cracked down on free speech in recent months, which has concerned Western leaders. Many journalists and members of opposition parties have been arrested.
Turkey is also becoming more unstable due to recent terror attacks, the Syrian war near its southern border, and the conflict with the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK).
The deal with the European Union may also be in jeopardy as Davutoglu reportedly brokered the agreement to limit refugees going into Europe in exchange for financial aid and visa-free travel to Turks.
Kemal Kilicdaroglu, he leader of the opposition Republican People’s party (CHP) has called the move a “palace coup” and a blow to democracy.
The news also caused a weakening of the lira.
