NATO to meet with Russia,perceives them to be a growing threat - from TRUNEWS

(TRUNEWS) NATO members have decided to meet again with Russia before July.

Moscow is optimistic about the potential talks, but claim it must include dialogue about Russia’s interests, as reported by The Washington Post.

“The Russian side has never avoided dialogue, we always have supported dialogue,” said Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin.  “We believe it’s the only way to tackle the problems we face. At the same time, a dialogue must be trusting and constructive and be based on respect of mutual interests, otherwise, it hardly can be productive.”

There will be a meeting in Warsaw between NATO countries, which is why they want to get together with Russia before that.

Jens Stoltenberg, the NATO Secretary-General said Thursday that foreign ministers want to reinforce defenses against Russia because they believe Moscow is a growing threat, but they also want to keep the lines of communication open.

He said,  ”(The ministers) all agreed in the current situation that we need a platform (like) the NATO-Russia Council to pursue transparency, predictability and to work for enhancing mechanisms for risk reduction to avoid dangerous situations, situations which can spiral out of control.

The NATO-Russia Council was created in 2002, and members met last month. But, major differences were not ironed out.  Relations suffered after the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

Meanwhile, NATO is expanding, which is also causing problems. On Thursday, the group invited Montenegro to become a member.  States of the former Yugoslavia, Croatia and Slovenia have also joined, angering Russia.

TRUNEWS has reported Russia will soon set up three new divisions to counter NATO expansion near their border. They will be stationed in Russia’s west and south, as NATO increases its presence near the area, according to RT. The alliance has positions in Poland and in the Baltic States in order to stop what they call “Russian aggression”.
