(TRUNEWS) Now that Target has enacted a policy to allow transgender people to use the bathroom of their choice they are starting to push the envelope, challenging other retailers.
A transgender in Washington D.C. went into the ladies restroom at a Giant Food store and was asked to leave.
The female security guard told Ebony Belcher, according to The Independent, “You guys can’t use our women’s restroom.”
Belcher filed a police complaint about the issue, claiming to have been pushed by the guard, 45-year-old Francine Jones, who was charged with assault. It was listed on the police report as a suspected hate crime.
The grocer apologized in a statement and professed the guard acted inappropriately.
“Giant has a longstanding commitment to creating a diverse and inclusive environment in which all associates and all customers are treated fairly and with respect at all times.”
Jones is employed by Wolf Professional security.
North Carolina recently passed a bill requiring people to use the bathroom which corresponds to their sex at birth. The Justice Department said the law is illegal and has threatened to withhold federal funding to the state.
To further promote its stance on the issue, last week the Obama Administration sent a letter to each public school in the U.S., directing them to allow students to use the restroom of their choice, as reported by TRUNEWS.
A new law in New York City has mandated that businesses must use the proper pronoun when addressing transgender people. A violation could result in a $250,000 fine. Transgenders are to be asked which pronoun they prefer.
One law professor at the University of California, Los Angeles disagrees with the rule.
“So people can basically force us – on pain of massive legal liability – to say what they want us to say, whether or not we want to endorse the political message associated with that term, and whether or not we think it’s a lie,” wrote Eugene Volokh.
