A group of naval experts say the Chinese military is almost complete on construction of their nation’s first domestically built aircraft carrier and launch it before the end of 2015.
A report in the Chinese newspaper Ming Pao, which did not quote any sources, said the carrier was non-nuclear powered and is scheduled for a launch on December 26th, the 122nd birthday of Mao Zedong.
“Based on these circumstantial reports, I’ll deem the claim by Ming Pao as quite reliable,” Collin Koh Swee Lean, an associate research fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore, told Bloomberg. “Assuming the carrier is launched on Dec. 26 this year, and fitted out subsequently before entering into a series of harbor and sea trials, the carrier should be ready for service by 2020.”
The carrier’s likely existence was bolstered by reported of the military increasing production on the J-15 jet fighter which launches from aircraft carriers.
China already has one aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, which was built from the hull of a Ukrainian ship.
