American pastor Saeed Abedini, imprisoned in Iran for his Christian faith, is now being threatened with new criminal charges according to his lawyers.
The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) reports that Abedini was repeated shocked with a taser by Iranian interrogators who also beat him and were verbally abusive. They continue to deny needed medical care for the injuries that have long plagued Abedini from repeated attacks and beatings.
The new twist is that interrogators told Abedini they are looking at adding new charges against him.
“They claimed Pastor Saeed has connections with anti-government groups and has made statements and taken actions against the government of Iran,” the ACLJ said in a statement. “Pastor Saeed denied all of these allegations, and once again asserted that he is apolitical and that he has never threatened the security of, made any statements against, or taken any action against the Government of Iran.”
Abedini’s wife Naghmeh, who has been working tirelessly for her husband’s release, expressed her grief over the situation in a statement released by the ACLJ.
“When will this nightmare end? Saeed is not a criminal,” she said. “Being a Christian and motivated by Christian values to help the poorest and most needy children in Iran should be seen as good for the Iranian society. Hearing that yet again the hardliners in Iran are trying to fabricate evidence against my husband and that he was abused and tasered is almost too much to bear.”
Iranian President Rouhani has said he would work to free Abedini and two other American prisoners if the US were to release 19 imprisoned Iranians jailed for violating sanctions no longer in place because of the new nuclear deal.
