DARPA Funded Project Creates Brain Implant to “Encode Memories” - from TRUNEWS

Researchers at the University of Southern California and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center have created an implant of microchips that will “encode memories” in the brain.

The implant, a ten year collaboration between the groups funded by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), allows the programmers to trick the brain using electric impulses that mimic the brain’s signals to turn short term memory into permanent memories.

The scientists claim this allows them to “bypass” any damaged areas of the brain.  They say they cannot recover memories from the damaged area, but their program would allow the brain to act as if those areas do not exist.

“It’s like being able to translate from Spanish to French without being able to understand either language,” said Ted Berger of USC, the project leader, told the Financial Times.

The scientists claim an accuracy rate of 90% in their research.  It’s the first publicly-recorded time scientists have been able to use computers to manipulate memories in the human brain.
