A senior Saudi prince is calling for the removal of King Salman and two other high ranking princes in a palace coup, claiming that the health of the king is in decline and that his son is actually running the country.
The prince, whose name has been withheld from the media for “security reasons”, wrote two letters earlier this month challenging the viability of the king remaining in power. The prince said that many in the nation outside the palace are losing confidence in King Salman and that a shortfall in the nation’s budget is causing serious criticism to fall on his son Mohammed bin Salman, the nation’s oil minister.
The prince told the London Guardian newspaper that he expects 4 or 5 of the king’s brothers and half-brothers to meet over the accusations in the letter.
“They are making a plan with a lot of nephews and that will open the door,” he said. “A lot of the second generation is very anxious. The public are also pushing this very hard, all kinds of people, tribal leaders,” the prince added. “They say you have to do this or the country will go to disaster.”
The last time a coup took place in the royal family was 1964, when King Faisal removed King Saud.
